The outreach of Barnabas Center was started in December of 1986 by the Fernandina Beach Ministerial Alliance. Its contributors see this organization as a means for the community to help its own people in crisis situations. The aid is temporary and is limited to a financial amount set by the Board. It is expected that the aid will provide the client with the necessary boost to continue to be self-supporting or to provide interim help while the client is awaiting support from other programs.

Boys Brigade - Fernandina Beach, Florida
The Boys Brigade is an organization for young boys sponsored by the Elm Street Church of God. The objective of the organization and its leaders is to provide a Christian atmosphere and role models for young boys, with emphasis on responsible behavior as well as care and concern for others. The group meets two to four times per month, usually on Friday afternoon or evening at the Church where a meal is served. Several field trips are planned during the year to nearby recreation areas, which are beyond the economic means of group members. Boys from any religious affiliation are welcome. The only requirement is that they attend a Sunday School program provided by a church of their choice.

City Rescue Mission - Jacksonville, Florida
The purpose of the City Rescue Mission is to serve the homeless and the needy through the love and compassion of Jesus Christ. Beyond structured recovery programs, services take the form of providing the basic elements of survival - food and shelter. Every day the Mission provides food for all those who come hungry. In addition, the City Rescue Mission provides over 200 beds nightly for men, women and children who come for shelter.

Greater Nassau Women's Services is committed to enthusiastically developing and maintaining a Christian-based, client-focused unplanned pregnancy facility to promote the sanctity of human life in Nassau County. They provide confidential and compassionate peer counseling and support groups. Offered for junior and senior high school students is education about the issues of sexuality, pregnancy and the value of chastity. Post-natal assistance is also provided through baby clothes and home placement.

Nassau Habitat for Humanity - Fernandina Beach, Florida
Nassau Habitat for Humanity is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, and is an ecumenical, Christian-based housing ministry that seeks to eliminate poverty housing from the world and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. Through volunteer labor, management expertise, and tax-deductible donations of money and materials, Habitat builds homes with the help of the homeowners. Houses are sold at no profit to partner families, and no-interest mortgages are issued over a fixed period. Small monthly mortgage payments, including taxes and insurance are repaid over an average of 20 years and deposited into a revolving "Fund for Humanity" which supports the construction of more houses. Construction is a cooperative effort between volunteers and home recipients. Nassau Habitat relies heavily on local sources for financial and volunteer support to carry on construction and administer its program of "a hand up, not a hand out."

Hope House - 9th & Date St., Fernandina Beach, Florida
Located at 9th and Date Streets in Fernandina Beach, Hope House ministry has been serving the needs of the disadvantaged, and minority population of our island for 10 years. It has a newly rebuilt facility that is staffed entirely by volunteers and furnishes a Biblical ministry of help for all. They provide a place of reconciliation and spiritual growth. They also provide emergency food and clothing assistance for needy community residents. Hope House is also used as a meeting place by two churches who have no home; and it is used by other Christian ministries. Visitors are welcomed at any time. Phone number is 321-0435.

Joy to the Children - Fernandina Beach
This group joyfully serves local children and their families a Christmas dinner courtesy of several local restaurants and resorts. Each child receives a new pair of shoes and a full warm outfit and a minimum of two toys. Some of the children are abused and neglected who otherwise would not have been told the Christmas Story and shared in the gift giving spirit of Christmas. All toys and clothing are made possible by contributions. Last year 130 children and their families benefited.

Safe Harbor Boys Home - Jacksonville, Florida
Founded in 1984, Safe Harbor admits boys age 15-17 who are experiencing behavior problems in home and at school or who through other circumstances are in need of alternative home setting. Referrals are accepted from the judiciary, counselors, pastors, relatives and friends. The purpose of Safe Harbor is to assist the boys in becoming responsible, mature and independent young men through spiritual, educational and vocational training. The program usually lasts 18-24 months. The program also stresses community service work. The boys participate at least once a month in a river cleanup project known as St. John's River Marine Litter Sweep. To gain the level of independent living at Safe Harbor they must think of and complete a community service project each month.

Kairos Prison Ministry/Kairos Outside
This Christian program ministers inmates in local prisons and conducts weekend sessions with prisoners on a one-on-one basis in an effort to change their lives based on forgiveness of their sins offered by Jesus Christ. The organization also works with family members to help them cope with their situation. The organization is directed by an interdenominational board of men and women, lay and clergy, drawn from our area, and is supported by donations from concerned individuals and churches.

Empowered Parents/Camp Consequence Program
Through counseling and classes, this program teaches parents how to alter bad juvenile behavior and attitudes by changing parenting techniques, and deals primarily with single parents. Camp Consequence places children in "survival" situations and stresses the importance hard work. This program has a strong Christian foundation.
